Turmeric and Aloe Vera

Turmeric is a popular spice for a variety of reasons. It is not only good for flavoring Indian dishes, but also for its medicinal purposes.

In fact, turmeric is well renowned for its ability to fight infections, reduce inflammation, as well as treat neurological problems, stomach problems, and even skin problems. Today, turmeric can be consumed in the form of a paste, ointment, powder, or as a supplement.

In addition to turmeric, aloe vera is a plant that is well known for its antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Native to Africa, this natural ingredient can also help fight acne, brighten skin, heal burns and aid with dry skin and skin inflammation. Aloe Vera is composed of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and salicylic acids, all of which combined makes aloe vera the powerful skin-healing agent it is.

Turmeric and Aloe Vera

The beneficial effects of turmeric and aloe vera are well documented and can be explained by the various physical properties of these ancient herbs. Indian turmeric contains curcumin (diferuloylmethane), which is effective for anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities

In one study, curcumin was found to be able to effectively treat wounds in rats as well (Rao et al, 2003).

Furthermore, aloe vera is often referred to as the “lily of the desert,” which essentially means that it is the plant of immortality. Since 1500 B.C.E. in Egypt, it has been used to treat burns, wounds, and ulcers. But how exactly does Aloe Vera have these medicinal properties? A big part of its effectiveness stems from the fact that it forms a protective coat on the skin that speeds up the healing process (Rajinder, 2008).

Turmeric and Aloe Vera Study

Corrosive chemical agents in our water, diet and environment can lead to irreversible skin damage including ulcers, scabs, skin pigmentation and bleeding. Some such pollutants are SO2, NO2, CO2, and Cl-, which can burn skin and actually kill living tissue. Luckily, aloe vera and turmeric have many amino acids and carboxylic functional groups that can work to neutralize skin and act as anticorrosive protectants

A study conducted by Rajesh Kumar Singh in the Horizon Journal of Medicinal Plant Research showed that aloe vera-turmeric gel relieves swelling and heals corrosive skin (Singh, 2015). In the study, the aloe vera-turmeric gel was applied at different concentration levels and at different time intervals to find the optimal use of the gel. The results showed that aloe vera acted to protect the skin surface while the turmeric acted as both a filler and a form of pigmentation that effectively treated skin that had been corroded by flue gas, sewage, and waste

The study also showed that turmeric controls the aggression of corrosive pollutants and slows down the skin corrosion reaction. Ultimately, the study concluded that application of the turmeric and aloe vera gel minimizes the corrosion rate of skin.

Turmeric and aloe vera are natural remedies that can heal many skin illnesses like dry skin, rosacea, eczema and more. The minerals, vitamins and amino acids found in these ingredients can help relieve inflamed skin, lessen swelling, heal wounds, and even relieve corroded skin

When two amazing herbs like turmeric and aloe vera are combined, the results are astonishing. As highlighted above, even corroded skin can be revitalized by turmeric and aloe vera. The studies not only show that these herbs are effective, but they also give insight into how to optimize these herbs for their top benefits (Singh, 2015).
